Capes for Kids

**Updated July 2014 - This is an ongoing project for me, so although this original post is old, I am still accepting capes all the time.**

I love to see people helping children in 3rd world countries.  I know this brings sunshine to many, many people.  I am getting involved in the Days for Girls organization that helps young women with their menstrual cycles in these 3rd world countries (I will post more about this project a little later when I get everything figured out).
I get a little sad, however, thinking about all the children here in America who could use those services.  I have found one that I think will be a very good fit for me.  The project of capes does not require any sewing (the pattern they have in Family Fun Magazine - CLICK HERE FOR PATTERN) - I don't sew, so this is a GREAT one for me!!

It is from an organization called Enchanted Makeovers.  The project is called Capes for Kids.

I would like to ask my readers to help me make this happen!  I have set a starting goal of 100 capes to send to this organization to distribute.  Will you help me?

How to help:
1.  Go to the link to make a cape (the Family Fun pattern)
2.  Email me when the cape(s) are complete.  ywbooks@yahoo.com   I will email back to you my address to ship them to (postage paid by you).
3.  You can enclose any kind of cash donation with your capes.  100% of this donation will be used for this Capes for Kids project - 100%!!
4.  When I receive the goal of 100 capes - I will ship them to Enchanted Makeovers.
5.  They will distribute them where they are needed most.

If you have any questions, please post a comment on the post and I will reply to it.  This way, if others have the same questions as you - they won't need to ask again.

Let's work together to bring SUNSHINE to the lives of these kids in shelters.

Thank you so much for your service and donations!!

Horses and my Daughter

My daughter loves horses.  She is always so happy when she gets home from riding them.  If she's having a bad day - she can watch Heartland and be all better.

What makes you happy?  Do it today!  You deserve it!

Ad Blocker for Internet

Here's your smile for the day!!

Have you ever wanted to block all those ads you get online?  Everything from ads in the side bar on FaceBook, to ads playing before your favorite YouTube videos?  I found an ad blocker that is the BEST!  I discovered it while watching a live web cam from Alaska, The Last Frontier (I'm sort of fascinated with Alaska - okay, a LOT fascinated with Alaska!!).  Every few minutes an ad would play during the live feed.  Annoying - right?  Someone who was chatting on this live feed with other viewers suggested downloading this certain ad blocker and those ads would no longer show.  I tried it.  It worked!  Not only for that but on FaceBook, YouTube, Yahoo Mail, everything!  I couldn't believe it.  No more ads on anything.

It's called Adblock Plus.  You simply go to their website and download the extension for your browser.  Don't worry - it automatically knows which browser you are using.  I have it on my Chrome Browser and FireFox.  I haven't tried Explorer - but I would guess it works for that one too.   You'll see a little stop sign with ABP in it up by your URL line.  The number below it counts the ads it has blocked on that certain page.  Awesome, huh?!?!?

Here is the main Yahoo Mail log in page.  See the HUGE ads that appear each time?

Here is my Yahoo Mail log in page.  No ads!

I have had to uninstall it once and reinstall it because I started to get some ads coming through - and reinstalling it solved the problem.  Other than this, I have had no issues with it, and it doesn't mess with my computer and its speed or anything.

Oh, Happy Day!

Impromptu Concert - The Piano Guys

Let's admit it - there are a lot of wonderful, uplifting things on the internet.  There is also a lot of garbage that you want to stay clear of.  I choose to only watch fun and uplifting things.  Here is one that I ran across today - it will simply put a smile on your face.  That's all.  Enjoy.

Change Your Words

I love this!!!

An unexpected youth activity taught a group of young men and young women the power of positive words and is now reaching beyond the small group - to thousands!

Original article was in the Deseret News.

Go on a date with your spouse!

My husband and I go on a date every Friday night.  We never miss.  Our kids just know - Friday night is mom & dad's date night.

This fun video from Eclipse reminds me of the FUN we have together.  So - go on a date with your spouse this week.  Go have fun with each other.  Sometimes we get so caught up in the day-to-day operations of a household, we forget to have FUN.  Go on - you two deserve it!

Posting a signature graphic into your blog posts

I wanted to add this cute signature graphic of my name and a sunshine tree to be at the end of each of my blog posts.
post signature

I found lots of tutorials online that messed with the html - and placed the graphic in places I didn't want it.  I finally figured out how to do it so it is actually at the end of my posts instead of under them, or in other places.  Here's how you do it after you have your image URL:

Go to your blog and sign in > Click on Design > Click on Settings > Click on Posts and Comments > On the Post Template line click
ADD (this will open up a text box) > Copy and paste this code (everything orange & green - including < to >:  <img alt="post signature" class="centered" src="http://lds-yw.com/assets/images/Vickie_signature_spotA.jpg" />  BUT CHANGE the URL (in green) to your image URL.  Starting at http://  Leave the " /> at the end.

You will now have a signature graphic at the end of each of your new blog posts (this won't add the graphic to past posts).  Oh, Happy Day!

Kid President - 20 Things We Should Say More Often

If you haven't seen Kid President on YouTube yet - you're really missing out.  He is one of my favorites.   (You'll see many posts on here with his videos.  He is one smart little dude).  He brightens many days with his spunkiness and cuteness.

Kind Words

When I dropped my son off at school today, he said "I love you, Mom".  That just made my day - coming from a 5th grader.  Kind words can be very uplifting.  Even if you only say 4.

No one is destined to fail

My Church is a bright light in my life

Being Someone's Sunshine can take on all kinds of meanings.  You may cook a delicious meal for your family - and be their sunshine for that evening.  You may pass a house that has beautiful flowers in front - they were your sunshine for that moment.  In my life - my Church is my sunshine - everyday.  Oh, I am not perfect.  But I strive to be better than I was yesterday. You will see that I post several things from my Church, about my Church, experiences I have from serving in my Church.  This is because I love my Church.  I believe in it.  I believe it teaches correct principles for living a happy life - and this helps me tremendously to have SUNSHINE in my life everyday.  I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  I'm a Mormon - I know it, I live it, I love it.   (Also known as the LDS Church)

YW learning leadership

I witnessed something that touched my heart at church.  I was handing out invitations to our young women for New Beginnings.  I gave one to everyone who was there.  As soon as we started to arrange our chairs differently for our combined lesson, a member of our Beehive class presidency came up to me and simply said, "Sister Hacking, can I have Kaylee's invitation?  She's not here so I will take it to her."
I was just so touched by this young woman and her grasping her leadership role of being in a class presidency.
